If you’ve added smart devices to your Southwest Florida home, you may have a few questions about what happens to them when you sell. You might want to bring your doorbell to the next place, or you’d prefer to leave it for the buyer. Either way, we’re happy to help you work through the decision.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out before we talk. We can walk through the house with you and discuss what you’d like to keep. Once that’s settled, we’ll help make sure buyers understand what’s included, and you’ll have time to prepare anything you’re leaving for someone new to use.

Let’s Talk Before Buyers Start Touring

If there’s a device you want to take with you, let us know before photography and showings. We can discuss whether to remove or replace it before buyers visit and make sure the written agreement reflects what you intend to leave. A thermostat you bought for yourself may look like part of the house to someone touring it. Getting that sorted out early means you won’t be trying to resolve different expectations while you’re packing.

As we go through the house, your phone can help us remember what’s installed. The apps you use may bring up equipment you rarely think about, such as the leak sensor under the sink. We can also look at what those devices need to work. If the lights depend on a hub beside your router, we’ll want to account for that hub when discussing what’s included.

A few notes about the equipment will come in handy later. Taking a photo of each model label while it’s accessible makes finding the right instructions easier, especially if the label is somewhere you’d rather not crawl behind twice.

Leaving a Device Also Means Preparing Your Account

Once we know what’s staying, you can find out how to get it ready for the buyer. A video doorbell, for example, may remain beside the front door while its recordings and notifications are still connected to your phone.

The manufacturer’s ownership-transfer instructions will explain what needs to happen. Deleting a device from your app doesn’t always complete the process, and a factory reset may be only one of the required steps. Looking up the instructions early gives you time to contact support if something isn’t clear.

If you pay for recording storage or another service, ask the provider what happens to that subscription when you move. They can explain how to cancel or transfer it and what the buyer will need to arrange. Keep their answer with the device information so it’s easy to find when you’re ready.

Financed or leased equipment needs attention before we list. If you have an agreement for solar panels or a battery system, bring it to us while we’re preparing your home for sale. We can help identify what needs to be addressed and who can answer questions about the terms.

We Can Work Out the Timing With You

Having the instructions ready doesn’t mean you need to disconnect everything immediately. You’ll still be using the house, and you may want the smart lock working while you’re making trips with the moving truck.

We can coordinate the handoff with you so you know when to remove your access. Some steps may require an internet connection, so check that before scheduling your service cancellation. Giving yourself a little extra time also leaves room to reach support if a device doesn’t cooperate.

Before resetting equipment, save any camera recordings you’d like to keep. Remember guest codes and access shared with family members as you follow the manufacturer’s directions. Your personal passwords should stay private, with the buyer establishing their own account through the provider’s process. As you finish, gather the manuals and setup information somewhere the buyer can easily find them. A short note about where the hub is plugged in or how to use a manual control can help, too. You know the house well, and those familiar details will be new to someone moving in.

We can refer back to the agreed inclusions with you before you finish packing, making sure the remotes and other accessories stay with the equipment they belong to.

Whether a move is coming soon or you’re just thinking ahead, you’re welcome to ask us about your Southwest Florida home. We’ll help you work through what you’d like to keep and what needs attention before you leave the rest behind.
