Island homes have their own sounds. Gulf breezes, elevated construction, and A/C running much of the year all add to the soundtrack. Most of it has an ordinary explanation.

Before tracking a sound down, note when it happens, where it seems to come from, and what else was going on.

Why Elevated Homes Creak and Pop

Many island homes sit on pilings with living space above. Framing expands in the afternoon sun and contracts in the evening, and wind can make an elevated home creak more than a slab home. New cracks, sticking doors, or a floor that feels bouncy are worth a professional look.

Plumbing Sounds

A bang after the washer shuts off is often water hammer. In condos, water moving through shared stacks is normal. Running water when nothing is on deserves a meter check, and a condo leak should be reported to the association.

A/C Sounds

Air handlers click, hum, and whoosh. Condensers on elevated platforms cycle on and off. A gurgle can mean the condensate drain needs attention. New grinding or rattling is worth a call.

Wind, Shutters, and Screens

Gulf wind can whistle through gaps around sliders and rattle shutters, screens, and under-house storage doors.

Scratching and Thumps

Roof rats are active at night and travel through palms. Iguanas and birds can thump on roofs and decks. Open areas under elevated homes give animals shelter, so check enclosures and screening. A licensed pest or wildlife professional can help.

What to Tell the Professional

Describe the sound, where and when you hear it, and what else is running. "The shutters on the Gulf side rattle whenever the wind is out of the west" tells a contractor exactly where to look.

If you'd like a recommendation for a local plumber, A/C technician, or pest professional, just ask. We're happy to share names we know.
